Dear my wife and son,
Hello family. I am currently stationed on a destroyer near Great Britain in the Atlantic Ocean. Ever since I was drafted, I had to go to war with the rest of our country. We are very lucky we are still alive right now. In all, the u-boats sank a total of 681 ships so far and things are looking grim (Danzer et al. 570). Hopefully that number will stay where it is after the convoys come to help us. Convoys are groups of ships that are traveling together for mutual protection, along with destroyers, like my ship. We are part of an interlocking system of convoys that stretch all the way from South America, North America to Britian, the Arctic Ocean coast of Russia, and the Mediterranean (Stuhlreyer 1). The convoys will hopefully provide us with protection that wasn't there since Hitler started using U-boats to attack our ships. These ships are helping our ship, along with many others, and planes that land on aircraft carriers all throught the Atlantic Ocean. Also, we have been able to decode an extremely annoying German code that they are transmitting between U-boats. This cracking of the German code was named Operation Torch (Stuhlreyer 1). This will hopefully help us know what they are saying to each other and it will help us know where they are by being able to track where the code was coming from. Well, I hope to see you soon!

Love your husband and father,

P.S. I am including a picture of our ship in this letter.

Dear family,
Things are looking a lot better since my last letter. With the help of the convoys and the airplanes flying with them, we've been able to destroy more boats than the Germans can produce. Also, America is has been sending out 140 ships each month since January to help us (Danzer et al. 570). Beginning in June, the United States is set to organize a "hunter-killer" campaign, which is going to be aggressively directed against the U-boats (Phillips 1). We will be organized into "killer-groups" so we can kill the ships. Included is a picture of the convoys stationed around us. I don't know when I will be able to write to you again. Say hi to George Jr. for me!
Love,
George Brown
